Qt, a cross-platform application and user interface framework, introduced major changes in handling accelerated 3D graphics during the last few years. Qt 5, the previous major version, was closely tied to OpenGL (ES) and the associated shading language. Qt 6 moves away from this tight dependency, introducing abstraction layers for 3D APIs to enable rendering Qt Quick and Qt Quick 3D scenes with Vulkan, Metal, Direct 3D 11 and 12, and OpenGL, while building on open-source source libraries to handle the translation of graphics and compute shaders in a world where target a single 3D API and shading language is no longer an option. With Qt's strong compatibility promises and vast support for platforms and devices, including some relatively exotic ones, all this comes with a number of challenges and compromises. In this talk we are going to look at this journey, with real world examples of the fun and no so fun aspects of moving a large 2D/3D framework on to new foundations.
